H.A.B.I.T. Program

H.A.B.I.T. stands for Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee. H.A.B.I.T. is composed of representatives from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, volunteers from the community, and private veterinary practitioners. It is the oldest animal-assisted program in the state and one of the oldest in the country. They sponsor programs that foster pet visitation to nursing homes, assisted-living residences, retirement and mental health centers, and residences for children with special needs, rehabilitation facilities, hospital settings, and other facilities. They have over 980 active volunteers involved in 205 different facilities. 106 schools in Knox and fourteen other surrounding counties have a Ruff Reading or Purrfect Reading program. More information can be found at: About HABIT | College of Veterinary Medicine

               Bella                             Rudy

Bella is a 5yr. Old Miniature Poodle. She was rescued from being used as a breeding dog in a puppy mill situation. Her health was poor, but she is all better now and ready to spread some love. She adores everyone she meets (especially children), and her favorite activity is lying across your lap for pets. Bella holds both a Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen Urban title from the American Kennel Club and is a certified therapy dog through H.A.B.I.T and The Alliance of Therapy Dogs. She also excelled in Intermediate Obedience classes.

Rudy is also a Miniature Poodle.  He, along with his brother, was surrendered to his veterinarian by the breeder at four weeks old. They were fostered by our Pre-K classroom last year, and both were adopted by CES staff. Rudy went on to complete Advanced obedience classes and holds Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen Urban titles. He loved being part of the school and returned as a certified therapy dog through both H.A.B.I.T. and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Rudy also holds a Therapy Dog title through the American Kennel Club.  

Bella and Rudy were also awarded the Charlotte Helen Bacon Foundation grant.
